Phase 5 Phonics
In Phase 5 the children will learn that there is sometimes more than one spelling for a particular sound, e.g. ai, ay, and a-e. They will learn that is may sound the same, but it looks different. They will also learn that sometimes a spelling can look the same but sound different. This is built on from Phase 3 where the children learnt there were 2 sounds for the 'oo' digraph.
By the end of this Phase the children will be aware that there are different spellings for the same sound and be able to recogise which spelling looks correct. The children will learn further "tricky words" and be able to apply their new knowledge in their reading and writing.
There are 2 sections in Phase 5, with 2 characters. We have Choose to Use Spellings with Suze and Switch it to Spell Sounds with Mitch.
We start with the Choose to Use sections, moving onto Switch to Spell after completing this.
You can help your child at home by helping them to practice the different spellings and read the words working out which sound to use. Below is an overview guide of the different sounds . with a weekly Parent Newsletter to help you to see the sounds and words the children are learning. We have also included some words to practice at home with these sounds. Please encourage your child to practice these so they can "read with speed".
