Our climate action plan

What is sustainability?

Sustainability in school means making conscious choices to reduce our environmental impact by:

  • Conserving energy
  • Reducing our carbon footprint
  • Managing waste
  • Promoting biodiversity
  • Reducing water usage
  • Travelling sustainably
  • Teaching children about environmental issues and how to be more sustainable

Why do we need sustainability in schools?

'The government requires the education sector to positively play its role in responding to climate change and inspiring action on an international stage. The education sector supports the delivery of the government's 25 Year Environmental Plan and Net Zero Strategy. Through education we have the privilege to be able to engage directly with children and young people who:

  • are passionate about the natural world
  • want to do their best to protect it
  • can influence their wider communities

Through their learned and lived experiences from early years to further and higher education, we will provide opportunities to develop a broad knowledge and understanding of the importance of nature, sustainability and the causes and impact of climate change and to translate this knowledge into positive action and solutions. In the UK, there are more than 16 million children, young people and adults in education. The enthusiasm of youth can inspire the whole of society to work together at the start of this crucial decade for the planet.'
