Phase 4 Phonics

In Phase 4 the children will start to build up their knowledge of phonics by applying what they have learnt in Phase 1,2 and 3 to start to hear more than 3 sounds in a word, progressing up to 4, 5 and 6 sounds in each word. Some of the sounds are tricky to hear so the practice will help the children to hear the hidden sounds and apply this in their reading and writing. The children will continue to learn new "tricky words" and be able to apply this into their reading and writing.

By the end of this Phase the children will be able to hear up to 6 sounds in a word, recognise spellings for each sound taught (including adjacent consonants)  and be able to use these to write and read simple words. They will be able to use their skills to read decodable books with their sounds they have learnt in.

You can help your children at home by downloading the Parent Newsletters and the Read with Speed activities and rehearse these words at home. This will help to embed your child's learning.
