Our International Day of Spanish focusing on carnivals across the Spanish speaking countries was a fantastic success! Thank you to our special guest, Miss Annabelle from Dance Days, who taught us all how to dance in a carnival style for our whole school parade at the end of the day. Please have a look below to see which Spanish speaking country each class learnt more about and to see some of our amazing work, dance photographs and videos.
EYFS
In EYFS we have been learning all about Spain. We learnt a good morning and good afternoon song in Spanish and then made our own flags of Spain. We really enjoyed taking part in the carnival dance session in the afternoon.
Year 1
In Year 1 we learnt all about Mexico. We learnt lots of facts such as the capital city, what people eat and drink there, what the climate is like, what schools are like, what traditions they have and much more. Did you know chocolate and popcorn originated from Mexico! We produced fact files based on what we had learnt about Mexico. Then we made masks and carnival floats to celebrate carnival which we wore and displayed during our whole school parade at the end of the day. We also tried the traditional foods tortillas and salsa. Yum!
Year 2
In Year 2 we learnt all about Cuba. We used atlases to locate Cuba on a map and then learnt lots of facts such as the capital city, what people eat and drink there, what the climate is like, what schools are like, what traditions they have and what the flag looks like. We then learnt how to say different colours and the numbers 1-10 in Spanish through song. Finally, we produced our own flags to wave during our whole school parade at the end of the day.
Year 3
In Year 3 we learnt all about Argentina. We located Argentina on a map and then learnt lots of facts such as the capital city, what people eat and drink there, what the climate is like, what schools are like, what animals live there, what traditions they have and much more. We then learnt about the colours of the flag and what each represented before making our own large versions. Then we learnt about why carnival is celebrated and watched a carnival parade. We make our own rain makers and colourful masks to use in our parade at the end of the day.
Year 4
In Year 4 we learnt all about Peru. We used atlases to locate Peru on a map and then learnt lots of facts such as the capital city, what people eat and drink there, what the climate is like, what schools are like, what traditions they have and much more. We produced fact files based on what we had learnt about Peru. Then we made a mask to celebrate Peru's festival of the Sun which we wore during our whole school parade at the end of the day.
Year 5
In Year 5 we learnt all about Colombia. We started the day with carnival music and carnival colouring. Then we had a Spanish lesson from Mrs Church. It was a bit of a round up lesson about all we have been learning about in Spanish last half term. Next, we shared a PowerPoint about Colombia and discussed each slide in turn. We found out lots of facts such as the capital city, what people eat and drink there, what the climate is like, what schools are like, what traditions they have and much more. We produced fact files based on what we had learnt about Colombia. Then we learned that Colombia is a Carnival City and we looked into some of the main carnivals that they have, learning about why they have them and how they celebrate them. We then used our imaginations to write a postcard as if we had been to a carnival ourselves, imagining the sights and sounds, the smells and the dancing and how it would have made us feel being there. In the afternoon we took part in a dancing session which was so much fun! At the end of the day we joined the school parade holding up our carnival themed colourings and sharing what we had done with the rest of the classes.
Year 6
In Year 6 we really enjoyed taking part in the carnival dance workshop, practicing our arm flares and salsa moves. We will be learning more about how Spain celebrates carnival over the Summer term within our Spanish lessons.
Our carnival parade...
Spring
Happy Valentine's Day. In Year 4 we had a fabulous Spanish tasting session. Needless to say not many children enjoyed the olives just yet and tortilla was the clear favourite.
Autumn
Feliz Navidad Newbold! Please find below a video of some of our children singing, "Noche de paz" (Silent Night), which we learnt in juniors as part of our Spanish lessons to perform in Church.
